Coal-based activated carbon comes in four distinct base materials: bituminous, sub-bituminous, anthracite, and lignite, each with a mix of micro, meso, and macro pore structures. This varied pore distribution makes coal-based activated carbon highly effective at removing both small and large molecular structures. It is commonly used for odour control in liquid and vapour phase applications, taste improvement in liquids, decolourization, and purification of wastewater and potable water. Coal-based carbon is available in granular, extruded (pelletized), and powdered forms.
